TimeandAncientMedicineisthefirstmonographtoexplore,ontheonehand,howtheintroductionofnewtimekeepingtechnologies(namely,sundialsandwaterclocks)affectedthepractice,rhetoric,andphilosophyofancientmedicineand,ontheotherhand,howmedicaltimekeepingpracticesaffectedengagementwithtimeelsewhereinsociety.Thestudyseeks,first,toofferachronologicalnarrativeofhowtimekeepingtechnologiesandmedicalpracticesevolvedandinfluencedoneanotherinancientGreeceandRome,withconsiderationofrelevantPharaonicEgyptianandAssyro-Babylonianprecedents.KassandraJ.Millerturnstoaseriesofcasestudies,drawnfromtheRomanImperialperiod,toinvestigatethematicquestions,askinghowdebatesovermedicaltimekeepinginteractedwithdebatesoverproperscientificmethodology,thestatusofmedicineasaformalart,andtherelationshipsbetweenmedicineandotherdisciplineslikemathematics,astronomy,andastrology.Throughout,thisstudyplacesepigraphic,artistic,andothermaterialevidenceforhourlytimekeepingindialoguewithselectionsfrommedicalliterature,someofwhichhasnotpreviouslybeenpublishedinmodern-languagetranslation.Ultimately,thisstudyrevealsthattimeandtimekeepingplayedfundamentalrolesinancientmedicaldebatesandpracticesandchallengesthetraditionalnarrativethatthesocialhistoryof“clocktime“onlybeginswiththeinventionofthemechanicalclockintheMedievalperiod.ItoffersnewinsightsintothespecificwaysthatphysiciansoftheancientMediterraneanengagedwiththeirevolvingtemporallandscapesandraisesquestionsabouttherelationshipsbetweentimeandmedicineinthemodernday.
